Summary
Ten years ago, while teaching in an impoverished hollow deep in the Appalachian hills, I took in a girl named Hailey Brooks after her family abandoned her.
She was twelve, skeletal, her skin covered in weeping sores from endless field labor. I took her to clinics. I bought her school supplies. Every month, I carved a hundred dollars out of my meager stipend to keep her fed and clothed.
