Summary
On the day I was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, my husband, Marcus, and our seven-year-old son, Toby, were huddled in the emergency room, staring anxiously at Serena.
She had cut her finger slicing fruit, requiring a mere two stitches, but the son I had carried for ten months was crying in heartbreak for her.
I held my pathology report, standing in the freezing draft of the hallway, waiting in vain for Marcus to ask about my biopsy.
Serena whimpered in pain, and Marcus immediately rushed to arrange a VIP private room.
