Summary
Ever since his insomnia worsened, my husband took a few days off every month to stay at an Airbnb along the coast.
He told me the rhythm of the crashing tide was the only thing that could coax his mind into quiet. I loved him, I worried for him, and so I never asked questions. I let him have his sanctuary.
Until the contractor called.
"Mrs. Hayes? The coastal beach house you two put on hold two years ago is finally finished," the man said cheerfully over the line. "We’re ready for your final walkthrough."
I stood frozen in my kitchen, the phone pressed against my ear.
