Summary
On the seventh day after I died on a gurney in the hallway outside Operating Room 3, Samuel Bennett finally remembered to return my calls.
The call went straight to the county medical examiner’s liaison.
"What is your relationship to the deceased?" the clerk asked into the receiver, her voice flattened by a shift full of strangers' catastrophes.
There was a long, hollow silence on the other end. "I'm her family," Samuel said. "I'm her fiancé."
He didn't know that on the emergency death record filed at 2:17 that morning, the box labeled Next of Kin Signature was completely blank.
