Summary
My father’s condition had just stabilized, and I was still at my parents' house, exhausted from the weeks of bedside care, when my phone buzzed with a notification. It was a traffic violation alert.
I tapped it open, and my heart skipped a beat. The violation—speeding and running a red light—had occurred in a small town nearly six hundred miles away. My husband’s hometown. My brain stalled; my car was supposed to be parked in our secure garage downtown, untouched while I was away.
I called Mark immediately. I didn't lead with small talk. I asked him if he had taken my car.
