Summary
Meredith kept our marriage on a digital kitchen timer.
Whenever I tried to voice a hurt, an exhaustion, or an objection, she would slide her thumb over the grey plastic button and set it on the granite island between us.
"Five minutes."
"You have five minutes," she would say, her voice as crisp and even as a quarterly earnings report.
When the alarm sounded, no matter what syllable was caught in my throat, no matter how hard my chest was heaving, she would turn on her heel and walk away. A clean recess. A boardroom adjournment in our own bedroom.
