Summary
The night dense fog swallowed the city, I called Danny thirteen times. On the fourteenth try, a woman’s sobs came through.
“Danny, I’m scared. Please don’t leave me.”
He hushed me. “Autumn, grab a cab. Sophie’s having a rough night.”
Outside the hospital, I clutched my ultrasound. The doctor had warned the heartbeat was failing and urged me not to be alone. But he was busy comforting his childhood friend. “I’m here,” he told her.
I forced out the words. “Danny, I’m at the hospital too.”
