He Saved Her While I Bled

Summary

Five years into our relationship, Damian had less and less time for me.

Every single date, without fail, would be cut short by a phone call from the single mother living next door. A burst pipe in her apartment, or her toddler waking up with a midnight fever—the moment her name flashed on his screen, Damian was out the door.

"Jessica, you're strong and independent," he would tell me, his voice dripping with that gentle, reasonable tone he always used. "But Kendra is doing this all alone. If I don't help her, she'll completely break down."

I chose to believe in his kindness.
