The bank said my house was being foreclosed.
I froze for a full three seconds.
“What house?”
“The property under your name, the mortgage is three months overdue. Please resolve this immediately.”
I glanced at my phone. It was the 15th.
The 15th of every month, an auto-draft took the payment for the mortgage—$3,500.
Eight years. Not a single missed payment.
“You must have the wrong person.”
“Ma’am, we do not make mistakes. Your property was used to secure a home equity loan last March, for $1.5 million. It is now three months overdue.”
I hung up.
My hand was shaking.
