Summary
When I was ten, my parents split up, scrambled to start their new, shiny families, and left me with my grandfather. We didn’t see each other again until the summer after my high school graduation.
They had come to the restaurant where I worked to book private dining rooms, and it just so happened to be my shift.
My father held his stepson's shoulder, smiling proudly.
"My boy scored a 1450 on his SATs," he told me. "We need your largest private room."
My mother, holding her little daughter’s hand, was booking the adjacent room.
