Keep It After Midnight

Summary

Tessa Mercer and I had had a birthday game since we were ten.

Every year on our birthdays, we were allowed to borrow one thing from the other person, then return it twenty-four hours later.

At ten, she borrowed the red dress I'd just received.

At eighteen, she borrowed the camera I'd spent six months saving for.

At twenty-five, she drove off in my car and didn't bring it back until just before midnight, grinning as she returned it.

For twenty years, I'd never once refused her.
