Love’s End

Summary

The company announced massive layoffs. As a senior executive, my wife, Kathy, was given one protected slot to save someone.

Everyone assumed she would give it to me.

But when the final list was posted, my name was at the very top. Meanwhile, Kathy’s bumbling little assistant, the one who couldn't file a report without a dozen errors, wasn't just safe—he was promoted three levels, straight into my old position.

Later, Kathy held me and tried to explain.

“Asher comes from nothing, Stewart. His entire family is counting on this salary. He needs this job more than you do.”
