Summary
My deadbeat father, a man I hadn’t seen in over a decade, suddenly reappeared in my life with a contract and a price tag: fifty thousand dollars in exchange for my bone marrow. His daughter with his mistress—my half-sister—was dying.
My mother tried to block the door when his lawyers came. "Have some goddamn dignity, Riley!" she screamed. "If you go through with this, if you take a cent from that man, don’t you dare call me your mother ever again."
My mother had plenty of dignity. When they divorced, she walked away with nothing—no alimony, no child support, not even a stick of furniture.
