Summary
“Your mother left you an item.”
The lawyer’s voice was calm, reciting a standard legal script.
My brother received one point five million dollars.
My sister received one point five million dollars.
Then, my turn.
The lawyer paused for three seconds, looking directly at me.
“A photograph.”
I froze.
“What kind of photo?”
She slid an envelope across the mahogany table.
I opened it. Inside was a twenty-year-old snapshot.
In the picture, I was seventeen, standing in the overgrown yard of our old house, wearing a stupid, lopsided grin.
