Summary
The night before Gideon planned to propose, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. After scraping together every dollar I had, I was still twenty thousand short for her surgery. Crying, I called Gideon, but the voice that answered sounded like him three years ahead.
"Mom got better, didn't she?" I sobbed. "You'll save her, right?"
Silence. Then his tone turned ice-cold. "She died. When you asked for money, I refused. Instead, I bought your best friend a thirty-thousand-dollar necklace."
I gripped the phone, my fingers shaking so hard the diagnosis papers crumpled. He laughed, dry and mocking.
