The conference room went silent for three seconds.
Mr. Harrison’s hand, hovering over his coffee mug, froze mid-air. He didn’t even look up. “Ava Maxwell, what kind of joke is this?”
“It’s not a joke.” I placed the resignation letter on the mahogany table. “My last day is next Monday.”
He finally lifted his eyes and smiled.
I knew that smile too well—the exact expression he’d given me for the past decade, every time I asked for a raise, every time I requested a promotion.
