Summary
The first time, my father-in-law, Walter, was sixty and needed a heart transplant. He was matched with my son’s heart.
The entire family descended on me, pleading, cajoling me to have another child so Leo’s heart could be "spared."
I refused. And Leo, my son, was taken—snatched from the street right before his college entrance exam.
I raced to the hospital like a lunatic, but I was too late. Leo’s heart was already gone.
Walter, my father-in-law, got five more years because of it.
