Summary
Whenever our family moved the livestock down to the winter pasture, my parents made sure my younger brother, Cody, had a detailed topographic map and a top-of-the-line satellite GPS watch strapped to his wrist.
I was given nothing. I was expected to trek twenty miles on foot across hundreds of rolling, featureless hills, blind-searching for wherever they’d pitched camp.
I used to quiet the ache in my chest by telling myself it was temporary. I just had to study hard, get into the county magnet school, and earn my way out.
