Summary
A week before Thomas and I were set to host our engagement party, my father underwent an angioplasty to place a coronary stent. I had been terrified, but Thomas—my fiancé, the hospital’s rising star in cardiology—had squeezed my hand and promised a quiet, private recovery room. Yet when my father was wheeled out of the recovery unit, his room was gone. Instead, he was left on a temporary gurney at the very end of the corridor. It sat directly across from the central nurses' station, exposed to the glaring fluorescent lights and the constant, indifferent rush of hospital traffic.
