Right before we boarded at the gate, Derrick gave my first-class ticket to his childhood friend, Sylvia, who had just gone through a bad breakup.
He leaned down to adjust my wool scarf, his touch gentle but his words carrying a quiet, familiar cruelty.
“Sylvia’s heart condition is flaring up from the stress,” he said. “Ten hours in economy would absolutely drain her. Be the bigger person, Irene.”
I looked down at the coach boarding pass in my hand, and a sudden, dry laugh slipped out of me.
