Summary
In the sixth year of our marriage, our daughter was diagnosed with leukemia.
I didn't hesitate for a second. I demanded they test me for a bone marrow match. But the pediatric oncologist stood in the sterile white hallway, clutching the lab results, his expression caught somewhere between pity and professional discomfort.
"Mrs. Whitman," he started, clearing his throat. "Based on the genetic markers in the blood panels... it is highly improbable that you are Lily’s biological mother."
I thought I had misheard him. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed, a low, irritating hum.
