Summary
I woke from the haze of anesthesia, a dull ache in my side from the appendectomy, to a far sharper pain: the emptiness in my womb. My baby was gone.
Zoe, Sebastian’s childhood friend, was giggling beside my bed.

I saw red. I grabbed my phone and called the police, reporting her to the state medical board, my voice shaking with rage.
