Summary
At the start of the new semester, my mother cut my monthly allowance from $1,200 down to $200.
She didn't even give it to me all at once. She doled it out in installments: $50 a week.
Every time I requested my money, she demanded a detailed expense report, down to the last penny.
She claimed it was to "cultivate the habit of thriftiness" and teach me "gratitude toward my parents."
I immediately turned around and posted a photo on Instagram.
In the picture, my left arm was draped around a guy with tattoos and piercings, and my right hand held a Big Gulp from 7-Eleven.
