Summary
When the old house needed rebuilding, I wired them fifteen thousand dollars without a second thought.
Later that week, while I was helping clear debris, my mom looked at me, a strange glint in her eye, and said, "You always were the clever one, weren't you?"
I didn't get it. I thought she was making some kind of joke.
I forced a smile. "Mom, I'm your daughter. What's that supposed to mean?"
She just scoffed. "Look at you. You barely visit, but the second you hear the house needs a total rebuild, you're here with cash in hand. It’s obvious, isn't it?
