Summary
Owen always claimed he despised complications.
Yet, without a word of prompting from me, he volunteered to tutor my cousin, Carlin, for her graduate school entrance exams—a girl who had flunked nearly every standardized test she had ever taken.
Every time he stepped out the door to meet her, his jaw was set, his expression cold as slate. "If I weren't trying to keep peace in your family, I wouldn't waste five seconds on that hopeless deadweight."
Carlin, too, constantly whined to me over the phone. "Corinne, Owen just calls me stupid. He doesn't actually want to help me."
