Summary

I was still staring at the word "PASS" on the results page for the state bar exam when my mother-in-law called.

“Did you make it, honey?”

I braced myself, figuring she was calling to tell me it was time to quit this career nonsense and be a full-time mom.

Instead, her voice dropped to a whisper. “I’ll wire you the retainer. I need you to be my lawyer.”

“I want a divorce.”

I froze. “What? Mom, why?”

Her life was perfect, wasn't it?

My husband, Mark, overheard and signaled for me to brush it off. “She’s just being dramatic. She pulls this crap every few years. Just ignore her.”
