Summary
The day I was diagnosed with leukemia, my first reaction wasn’t to cry.
It was a wave of relief.
Well, since I’m not their biological daughter anyway, at least I won’t owe them anything when I die.
When I was six, my younger sister and I were fighting over a stuffed bear. My mother dragged me into a corner, looked me dead in the eye, and enunciated every single word:
"You are not our biological child. Everything you have in this house is a charity we have bestowed upon you."
From that day on, I never asked for a single thing.
