Summary
My mother always said my whole life was built on sheer luck.
When I got first place on an exam, she’d say, “You’re a good guesser.”
When I won a gold medal, it was, “The judges must have been blind.”
When I was accepted into Kingston University, she told everyone we knew, “The girl has no real talent. She’s just lucky!”
So, on my first day of school, she handed me a book of scratch-off tickets.
“Since you’re so lucky,” she said with a thin smile, “you can rely on luck for your living expenses.”
“You get one book per semester. Whatever you scratch is what you get. That’s fate.”
