Summary
It had been nineteen years since my divorce and expulsion from the Sterling family of New York, when my son suddenly called to invite me home for Christmas Eve dinner.
I held a delicate, double-sided embroidered lantern I had just finished crafting, didn't even glance at the caller ID, and let out a soft laugh.
"Isn't it lively enough with your beautiful Aunt Chloe keeping you company?"
The line went silent for a few seconds.
The young man's voice was crisp and clear, but carried a deliberate, distancing politeness: "Grandmother said the family should be together for the holidays."
