The holidays were upon us. I was in the kitchen, making Christmas cookies with my wife and daughter, when the phone rang.
“Kai.”
Just one word, and I knew who it was. Victoria.
But we hadn’t spoken in seven years. The sound of her voice, after all this time, was a cold shock.
What could she possibly want now?
“What is it?” I asked, keeping my tone flat, emotionless.
On the other end, her breathing hitched, turning ragged and desperate. “I’m downstairs. Can you come down?”
“I have something really important I need to tell you—in person.”
Downstairs?
