Summary
When Julian got home from his night shift, I had just placed a bowl of garlic butter noodles—his favorite—on the table.
I wanted to tell him that my mother had finally agreed to let us get married.
Instead, he tossed his car keys onto the table and said exhaustedly, "I got married."
The noodles were still steaming, but my heart instantly turned to ice.
"What?"
"I married the new nurse from the ER."
"She's young, and she's completely devoted to me. I couldn't just leave her without any security."
I gripped my chopsticks, my fingertips trembling.
