Summary
My mother was dying. The hospital had issued three critical condition notices in a single night, each one a desperate plea for a family member’s signature.
I was three hundred miles away on a business trip, frantically calling my wife, Lily. I begged her to go to the hospital, to sign the consent forms, to give my mother a fighting chance at surgery.
Her refusal was ice-cold.
"I have a crisis at the office, Ethan. I can't just drop everything and take a personal day."
"Your mom has always been healthy," she added, her voice dripping with annoyance.
