Summary
When the neighborhood watch issued a string of crime alerts, my mother went into a frantic tailspin, desperate to set up a duress code for my older sister.
Her face was pinched with worry as she cupped Brook’s hands. "You’re deadly allergic to mangoes, baby. If you’re ever in trouble, just text or call and say: "Mom, I’m craving mangoes." The second I hear that, I’ll know someone has a gun to your head."
Only then did she notice me standing in the doorway. Her expression flattened into immediate irritation. "You want one too? Fine. What are you allergic to again?"
