Summary
Henry claimed it was treatment for my avoidant personality. His rule was simple. Whenever he asked a question, I had three seconds to answer. Silence after two seconds meant rejection. If I could not speak up, he said, my grievances deserved to rot inside me.
Once, I lost my keys in a downpour. Anxiety froze me when he picked up. Henry hung up instantly. Three seconds are up, he said. Do not bother calling if you cannot talk.
When I was framed for plagiarism, panic left me mute before the accusers. Henry let go of my hand and walked away. Three seconds are up, he said.
