Summary
The new girl, Kendall Cross, had been released from the emergency clinic barely an hour ago, her wrist wrapped in fresh white gauze. She stood in the center of our homeroom, trembling like a bird caught in a cold rain, and pointed her finger straight at me.
“She cornered me on the roof terrace yesterday afternoon,” Kendall whispered, her voice cracking just enough to carry across the breathless room. “She stood over me for forty minutes, tearing into my family, laughing about how poor we are. She wouldn't let me leave. She wouldn't let me get a single word in.”
