Who Lives in My House?

Chapter 3

2,441 words

As soon as I left the complex, I rushed straight to the police station. To my astonishment, Tiffany and her brother Ben were apparently already 'well-known' regulars there.

The officer who greeted me looked utterly helpless.

"This is tricky for us. The security guard is her brother, and he insists it's his sister's apartment. We can't just forcibly remove her…"

His words were diplomatic, but I easily read between the lines.

Essentially, the siblings were notorious for causing trouble, and the police couldn't do much.

The officer offered a sympathetic suggestion:

"At most, we can mediate. For this civil dispute, you can choose to sue, and the court can issue an eviction order…"

A court-ordered eviction? How long would that even take?!

The thought of the disgusting mess I'd glimpsed in my apartment made my stomach churn. Tiffany was practically turning my place into her private territory!

I took a deep breath, a sudden idea flashing through my mind. I turned back to the officer.

"Officer, it's not illegal for me to enter my own apartment and clean out my belongings, right?"

The officer cleared his throat.

"If there's no rental agreement, then no, it's not illegal. Just make sure no one gets hurt."

Well, isn't that just perfect!

Armed with that clear answer, a surge of clarity and determination coursed through me. I strode out of the police station.

Just outside the station, I spotted Tiffany down the street, on her phone, with Ben standing beside her, holding her shopping bags.

I paused, then quickly moved closer, hiding behind a storefront sign. Their conversation drifted to my ears.

"Ben, that guy showed up. They're not actually going to take the apartment back, are they?"

"Don't worry. Next time, I won't even let him set foot in the complex!"

Well, well, well. No wonder Ben's attitude was so strange. They were clearly in cahoots, ripping people off from the inside!

Their conversation continued:

"He has the deed! What if he calls the police later?!"

Ben thumped his chest, boasting:

"No problem. Next time, I'll find an opportunity to just snatch the deed and tear it up. Then he won't have any proof!"

A muscle in my cheek twitched. These two clueless idiots were almost making me laugh out of sheer exasperation!

Did these legal illiterates really think tearing up a deed would make it disappear?!

Gazing at my phone screen, which displayed "Video Recording Ended," a chilling smirk spread across my face.
