But I see new accounts are being created, it’s weired.
As of this writing, there are nearly 200 users who have tried to sign up in the past 14 hours but haven’t activated there account. So, that’s 200 emails sent. It might be that the server has a limit on how many emails can be sent per X and some activation emails may be slow to arrive or not sent at all. I dunno yet. But yeah, it is weird.

Well I asked activation e-mail resend 3 or 5 times, and from yahoo I recieved e-mail to that account within minutes. The real question were all those e-mail sent
It shows that its been sent, to the eudora address you mentioned and that domain isnt on the block list. Want me to manually activate it? or you want to wait and see if it finally arrives?
Could be blocked by them, as it comes from “locohacker.net”.
I have just changed my password and didnt get email either so that must be it.
I have checked my filters, spam, and blocks and it’s not there and not blocked.
The attached image below is what I recommended above. It isnt a mod, so to speak, but a feature that has to be enabled. Note the option Q&A
Now, this wont end are constant spam, but it will stop a very large percent.
It simply asks a question when a user attempts to register. A question that we determine, and can edit at any time.
For example a question might be :
What are the first four letters of the word LocoHacker?
The person( or bot in our case) must answer the question correctly to continue with the registration. In addition to this, you’d change the Registration Attempts to 1. If the question is answered incorrectly, that particular user is locked out of that session. The best a bot can do is guess at the answer.. and they only get one chance. A “live” user, with half a brain, will be able to answer the question in one try.

ah I was checking the mod, and is like putting so admins can activate users which is something that the forum already has I just dont want the pain to be activating people 🙂

First user activation, then admin activation.
This is for sure less headach then clearing spam.
If the question stops the bots just remove those already registered altogether.
I will give perm ban for every one that posts with reason “spam” you can remove them once in a while and clear the ban list.
I agree with Chike. Getting to be a couple hundred total per day. The link Chike posted is a good place to start. I’m able to stop this kind of activity on my own forums by adding an extra question upon signing up also.
Yes a question, plus double activation should do it, and once you have it we can post active spammers names so you can delete them.
Eventually we’ll get them all.
I’m guilty or not doing this every time myself, but if we remove the user, as well as their posts, it will stop a lot of it.
If we only remove the posts they attempt to make, they simple try to post again once the bot comes back around.
I’ve created a new account, never recived the activation e-mail about 10 minutes after, checked that account from another e-mail and got the message instantly.
Better check that.
lol I know, K I just waiting for the phpbb to do an update which should be soon so I can add that mod you sufgested but i really dont like adding mods cause every time i need to update is a pain 🙄
Bots take over new computers every day so that won’t help much if bots can still register.
They must be stopped at the front door, question | admin aproval, and then removing completely every spammer
I don’t think you need to look for patterns, any spamming user will spam again if not today then in a year. Just remove any spammer, at least they will need to go through registretion again, and the question may stop them.
If it was possible to deactivate all accounts and send them an e-mail to reactivate that would take them through the question again that may help get rid of all the bots that already registered.
The question is quite eas and I already ban one that was registered after it was enabled. Can it be made a pool of questions so bots may not learn the answer?
I can, and do remove users. After they post spam, I remove/delete their account. If I can zero in on a pattern or reuse of the name, I add it to the “disallow” username list. This will stop that name and any names like it from registering.
The “answer a question” method is the way to go in my opinion. It isn’t 100% but I think its pretty damn close.@locohacker wrote:

Again, in my opinion, this is only effective if you can block a certain pattern in the name or block by domain. I’m sure there are literally thousands of available addresses to use, per bot, so our list would end up being very large. @locohacker wrote:
but did you check which day they register? cause that should stop the bots
The two I just removed registered in january, so they would not have seen the question. eventually we can catch up.
U can’t remove users, I give them a ban for a month, you can follow and remove them but that won’t help either as new bots register every day, and from the already registered 40k+ users I believe not even a tenth are real.
ah I think you can only have one at the time, umm its prob not bots than that are registering, must be someone just being an asz lol and registering to spam manually
It’s a mod or a feature you just need to enable?
Strange…..
What is the domain of the one that didn’t receive the activation email?
@String wrote:
eudoramail.com
It is atualy going to my lycos.com account that was migrated from this domain.
But I see new accounts are being created, it’s weired.

I just looked and there is a chike3 account that shows that the activation email has been sent. That must be the one that you never received.

Good point.
yeps, I giving those that spam a permanent email ban 🙂
They will just make a new one.
BTW it seems they still penetrating, no way to make the question random?
nop, umm but did you check which day they register? cause that should stop the bots 🙄

Dude it’s getting out of control.
K, I gonna add that mode 🙂 next week, sorry guys for the late reply but summer is almost ova hehehe

Yes but it’s a lot of work for admins.

Activation had been set to none… it’s now been set to user activation.

And that alone took almost all spam out? Nice.

Spam begin piling again
One day you will have to get off ur lazy azz and do it LOL
I will check, but I think that can’t be done the way I set it up.
Cause they have to have 3 approve posts before they can post without approves 🙂
pacman, is that a mod that needs to be install or can it be done without it?
ouch admin approval man I hated when sites did that too me lol we must think of another way
Bots take over new computers every day so that won’t help much if bots can still register.
They must be stopped at the front door, question | admin aproval, and then removing completely every spammer
ah lol I saw that in vbforums nice good idea let me see if I can find a mod for that 😀
k i added a new question field in registration see if this stop the bots 🙂 but we have to ban them emails from the already register bots :swift:

lol true, but man all this damn mods to stop spam are a pain in the asz to install
Few bots start penetrating your question, see if you can make a better one.
@String wrote:
Not that strange. I would have blocked also any domain containing “hacker” in it.
It’s imfiles, sender email should be changed accordingly.
So what you have done? I see only few spam last couple of days.
Yes, one at a time but differente for each registration I mean.
And why if I approve someone post I still have to prove other posts he make?
make it answe 2 question for aproval LOL
answer plus question stopped spam on my forums.
