Summary
The tremor struck without warning, a violent jolt that ripped through the pavement. I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant, heavy and aching, when the shearing metal of a streetlamp gave way above me. The impact slammed into my side, throwing me to the concrete, and a sudden, warm gush tore through my body as my water broke.
Through the dust and screaming, I saw my husband, Brett. He had thrown his body over Lacey, his twenty-two-year-old lab intern, shielding her beneath the concrete overhang of a café.
