Summary
Forty minutes before the final essay section of the Bar Exam, my phone buzzed in my coat pocket. It was the director of the preschool.
"Cora? Thank God you picked up. It’s Ruby—she took a terrible fall on the playground asphalt. Her forehead split open and the bleeding just won't stop. The paramedics are on their way right now!"
"You're down as the primary emergency contact. We need you here immediately."
Overhead, the test center's intercom crackled to life, a robotic voice instructing examinees to queue for metal detectors and proceed to their assigned testing stations.
